SUMMARY:Count Birds with the Door County Land Trust!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a series of beginner-friendly guided birding walks in celebration of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC)—an international citizen science project hosted by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The GBBC invites people around the world to spend as little as 15 minutes observing birds and sharing their sightings to help scientists better understand and protect bird populations. \nDuring three out of the four days of the GBBC\, the Door County Land Trust (DCLT) is hosting relaxed\, guided bird walks at four of our nature preserves throughout the county. These walks will be led by DCLT’s Community Conservation Coordinator\, Paige Witek\, and are designed especially for new and curious birders\, with a focus on learning the basics of birdwatching in a supportive\, welcoming environment. \nNo prior birding experience or special equipment is required. Binoculars are helpful but not necessary\, and guidance will be provided on using the Merlin Bird ID and eBird apps to submit observations. All bird sightings recorded during these walks will contribute to the global Great Backyard Bird Count. \nWhether you’re just getting started or looking to build confidence in your birding skills\, these walks offer an easy and meaningful way to connect with nature and contribute to conservation science. \nNo registration required\, BUT check back here for any possible weather cancelations before heading out.

SUMMARY:Strawberry Creek Salmon Spawning Facility Tour - FULL
DESCRIPTION:Join Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources staff for a tour of the Strawberry Creek Chinook Salmon Spawning Facility\, located adjacent to the Door County Land Trust’s Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Nature Preserve. Each October\, mature Chinook Salmon make their remarkable journey up Strawberry Creek to spawn\, providing a spectacular natural event. At the spawning facility\, their eggs are collected\, fertilized\, and then transferred to the Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery for rearing. \nIn the spring\, approximately 110\,000 salmon fingerlings are stocked into the pond at Strawberry Creek.  Here\, they are nourished for several weeks\, imprinting on the creek before they make their way downstream to the vast waters of Lake Michigan. This cycle not only supports a thriving fishery for local anglers but also ensures that many of these salmon will return to the creek as mature adults to spawn\, continuing the cycle. \nThis interactive\, informative tour will delve into the fascinating life history and biology of Chinook Salmon\, exploring their role in the Great Lakes ecosystem. Learn about the challenges they face\, the science behind the spawning facility and hatchery process\, and the contributions this facility makes to the region’s fishery heritage. Don’t miss the chance to witness the inspiring journey of an iconic species. \nThis event’s registration is FULL\, \nplease (CLICK HERE) to join the Event Waiting List*.\nWe’ll contact you as soon as possible if space becomes available. \n*Please note filling out the Event Waiting List form does not register you for this or any other events you select.

SUMMARY:Understanding Our Waters: Why Conservation Matters on Washington Island
DESCRIPTION:Washington Island’s freshwater resources are vital—not only for drinking water and daily living\, but for the island’s environment\, economy\, and future sustainability. This educational program explores the deep connection between land and water\, highlighting how the protection of natural areas plays a key role in safeguarding water quality and quantity. Through the work of the Door County Land Trust\, we demonstrate how conserving forests\, wetlands\, and open spaces helps recharge groundwater\, reduce runoff\, and maintain the island’s fragile hydrological balance. \nParticipants will learn where our water comes from\, the pressures it faces from climate change and development\, and how land conservation is a powerful\, lasting tool for protecting this critical resource. Whether you’re a lifelong resident\, seasonal visitor\, or simply curious about how island ecosystem’s function\, this program offers valuable insights into why water conservation isn’t just a good idea—it’s a necessity. \nThe program will begin with a presentation starting at 1:00 pm at the Art and Nature Center. We will continue the discussion at Little Lake Nature Preserve at 2:30 pm for a guided hike to experience one of the island’s unique water resources. The presentation will be approximately 45 minutes and the hike will finish around 2:00 pm. The hike will be approximately 1.5 miles in length with some areas of the trail containing very uneven\, rocky terrain – sturdy shoes recommended. Please feel free to attend only the presentation or the hike if you desire to do so.
