Join conservation easement landowners, Craig and Sandy Schultz, for this rare guided opportunity to visit the Woods at Monument Point Natural Area. This natural area is a combination of three private properties protected by conservation easements and 62-acres of Door County Land Trust protected lands. A temporary route will be created with flagging through this relatively undisturbed forest of mature red oak, beech, hemlock, and white pine, with an understory of interesting shrubs and plants, including leatherwood. This beautiful forest hosts a number of rare species including Red-shoulder hawks which nest here, and the state threatened Long-spur violet. Fishers and bobcats have also been seen here on forest cameras. Wood thrush and Ovenbirds should be singing. Be prepared to wander and explore this seldom seen natural area as we stop in silence and use our senses to listen, smell, touch, and be one with this forest community.
Sturdy hiking shoes and long-sleeved shirts and full-length pants for off-trail protection are a must. Hiking poles will be helpful to navigate through hidden obstacles: holes, rocks, downed trees, and slippery leaves. This will be a challenging hike so please assess your abilities.
