Saving the Bats at Three Springs Barn
July 19 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Discover the roosting colony of little brown bats who have been raising their young in the Three Springs barn for decades. Marilyn Hansotia has been monitoring this bat colony since 2011 providing a benchmark for scientists to discover the tragic population drop beginning in 2014 from white-nose syndrome. The decline in the Three Springs barn bat population signaled the arrival of the disease beyond the east coast and its devastating effects. Participate in this evening’s bat monitoring count as they emerge at dusk from the barn. This data will continue to help us monitor how the county’s bat population is slowly recovering from this disease. We’ll walk on a flat ½-mile trail down to the barn where the evening count will take place. Wear sturdy shoes like hiking boots. Bring bug repellent and a flashlight.
